A New Zealand Retelling of Folklore: A Sunny Tale of Maui and More Sunshine!!
Maui of a Thousand Tricks was a conniving little devil of a trickster or some dude covered in tattoos that was used to getting his way. One day he crankily decided the sun bothered him because he didn’t want to go to bed and all his friends went to bed too early. It also annoyed him that the daytime hours were too short to do some gardening so everyone’s yard looked trashy, go shopping for clothes and make a home-cooked meal before sunset. Work for construction workers and outdoor jobs had limited hours. People were getting obese from all the frozen dinners that they were eating. He decided to beat up the sun and that was his method of choice with dealing with things. He took his grandma’s jaw out of his back pocket and lassoed the sun closer to give it a beating. The sun pleaded with Maui for within an inch of its life and promised to move more slowly across the sky so Maui could spend more time with his friends and do the outdoor things that he enjoys.
Then after the brawl, Maui went fishing with the guys. Maui was such a recluse and a nut, that he punched himself in the face and used his sinfully delicious blood to haul in the biggest catches ever. His catches were so big that they became the Polynesian Isands and then he rewarded himself with a vacation for his good deeds for the day!
